July 2008
Dear Parents,
Thank you for choosing University School for the 2008-2009 school year
which starts on Monday, August 18. Our goal is to provide gifted
students with the best possible educational experience. Our school
is a place where students are able to maximize their potential. It
is a pleasure to have your family with us.
NEW FAMILIES AND BUDDY FAMILIES
PICNIC - AUGUST 12 - 5:00 P.M.
All new families and their University School buddy families are
invited to a BYOP (Bring Your Own Picnic) to be held at school on
Tuesday, August 12, at 5:00 p.m. This event is being sponsored by
the University School Association (USA), which is our school's
parent-teacher organization.
REGISTRATION - AUGUST 13 AND 14
All University School families need to come for registration
according to the schedule below. At registration, you will be
filling out information and emergency contact forms. You will also
have the opportunity to purchase milk and/or pizza, purchase school
t-shirts, pick up fundraising information, and more.
IMMUNIZATIONS
Please be sure that all of your child's immunizations are current.
Check with your doctor or the Tulsa City-County Health Department for
current requirements. If your child is new to University School or
has received any new immunizations in the past year, please bring a copy
of those records with you when you attend registration.
SCHOOL STARTS AUGUST 18 - WEAR
APPROPRIATE ATTIRE
It is important for students to dress appropriately at school.
Following are some guidelines to help you and your children choose
appropriate clothing for school days:
Students should
wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. Flip flops, open-toed
sandals, boots, clogs, and shoes with high heels are unsafe for
playing on the playground and for walking up and down our stairs.
Flip flops are particularly dangerous--please do not allow your
child to wear them to school.
Please also
remember that students' clothing should be modest and should not
distract from the educational process. I have asked
Mrs.McCollum to monitor the dress of students, and she will be
checking to be sure that the dress code is being followed. The
school handbook, which is available on our website, lists more
specific guidance about appropriate school dress. Feel free to
ask if you have any questions.
Also, each Friday
is School Spirit Day. Students, teachers, and staff are
encouraged to wear University School or TU shirts.
NO PEANUT POLICY
Due to an increasing number of students with severe peanut
allergies, we ask that you not send any peanuts or food containing
peanuts or peanut butter to school. This can be a life-threatening issue
for those students affected, and we appreciate your consideration.
BACKPACKS MUST FIT
IN LOCKERS - NO ROLLING BACKPACKS
For safety reasons, rolling wheeled backpacks will not be allowed at
school. Backpacks must fit inside school lockers. Downstairs
(through Primary 3), locker widths are 6.5 inches, and they are 10.5
inches upstairs (Intermediate 1 and up). More specific dimensions
are included on the school supply lists.
PARENT-TEACHER
INSTITUTE - SEPTEMBER 4 AND 5
Each year, University School parents pay to provide speakers who are
experts in the area of parenting. Sally Ogden, a Love and Logic
Institute speaker, will be our guest. The event will be held at
Family and Children's Services. Watch for more information soon.
PARKING
Parking for parents is available in designated spaces in the parking
lot on the northeast corner of 4th Place and College Avenue.
Parent spaces are along the south edge of this lot and are marked as
University School Parent Parking. You will need a sticker for your
car, and these are available from the front desk for a one-time of $1.
Please do not park in the University Methodist parking lot (just south
of our building) or in the Children's World/Child Development Center
parking lot (just north of us).
SCHOOL DAY PICK-UP
AND DROP-OFF
Drop-off and pick-up times can be problematic and dangerous.
We are resolved to provide the safest environment possible for our
students. Unattended cars, double parking, or cars pulling in from
the wrong direction during pick-up and drop-off are unacceptable
hazards. Your cooperation is essential. A complete set of
procedures is included in the school handbook and is also available at
the front desk. If you have any questions, please ask.
Procedures for the drop-off lanes are strictly enforced from 8:25 to
9:00 each morning, and from 2:30 to 3:15 each afternoon. Drop-off
and pick-up times are listed below. Please be sure to check this
information to make sure you are dropping off and picking up at the
correct time and in the correct lane.
NEWSLETTERS
Director letters and class newsletters will continue to be
distributed only in electronic format. The weekly director letters
and biweekly class newsletters are posted on the website in both regular
(html) and Adobe Acrobat (pdf) formats. If you do not have
Internet access, paper copies of the newsletters may be requested for an
annual fee of $10 per family. You'll find us online at
www.uschool.utulsa.edu.
SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS
School supply lists are available on the school website in the
"Back-to-School" section. If you pre-ordered school supplies at
the end of the 2007-2008 school year, your student's supplies will be
ready and waiting for him or her in the classroom on the first day of
school. If you'd like to save time and energy shopping for
supplies, you can still order a school supply pack for your student.
Information is available by clicking the heading above.
SCHOOL CALENDAR
Our 2008-2009 calendar is now available on our website. Please
be aware that dates are subject to change, and the calendar may be
updated if needed. We will do our best to inform you of any
changes that occur, but be sure to check the calendar periodically to
get the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding important
school events.
EMAIL LIST
Our parent email list is a great way to stay up-to-date with school
events, deadlines, and activities. If you are not already on the
list and would like to be, please email your request to Shelly McCollum
at
shelly-mccollum@utulsa.edu.
EXTENDED DAY
PROGRAM
An Extended Day Program (EDP) enrollment form is enclosed. If
you will be enrolling your student(s) in our before or after-school
program, please complete and return the form to school. The
program is open to all University School students on a monthly or
drop-in basis. More information is available on the school
website. If you have any questions, you may contact Debra Price at
631-5084 or
debra-price@utulsa.edu.
TARDIES
It is very important that students arrive at school early enough to
be in the classroom ready for instruction on time. Students in
Intermediate 1 through 8th grade may enter the building at 8:30, and
school starts promptly at 8:45 a.m. Students in Early Childhood
through Primary 3 may enter the building at 8:45 a.m., and school begins
for these classes at 9:00. the first few minutes of class are
important, and being late not only puts a student at a disadvantage, it
is also inconsiderate to the other students in the class.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Below is a brief listing of some events occurring near the beginning
of the school year. Please put these dates on your calendar now.
